Is your relationship making you fat?

Being in a committed relationship could be making you fat.

We’ve all been there. You get comfortable with your partner and find yourself going for lots of romantic dinners (steak and chips? Followed by crumble? Oh go on then!) or you just relax at home in front of a film, with the remote in one hand and the local takeaway menu in the other.

Now it’s official. Having a serious partner is increasing our stomach size. A recent survey has showed that being in a relationship is the biggest source of weight gain, even more than going on holiday or hitting the Ben & Jerry’s after a break-up. 62 per cent of the people interviewed said they gained up to a stone after committing to their partner, with 72 per cent saying they also thought their partners had packed on the pounds. 66 per cent of those polled by company Diet Chef said both they and their other half had put on weight.

The main problem was also revealed – portion size was women’s main pitfall with more than half saying they matched what their men ate, with 56 per cent saying this contributed to their growing tummies. The other obvious one was the fact that couples spend time together at home, with 21 per cent saying they ate at home.

Three of the activities that couples said they did together also involved extra calories – eating at restaurants, eating in and going for dinner parties.
Ever find yourself slumming it in jogging bottoms? You’re not alone. It also showed that standards of behaviour got more relaxed the longer a couple dates. 40 per cent of us don’t mind burping in front of our other half, while 26 per cent think farting is fine.

If you’re worried about your spreading middle, maybe it’s time to take up a couple’s sport like tennis or running, or maybe just opt for a salad from time to time.
