For a relatively small country Singapore has some incredible outdoor spaces. So if you are a fun-lovin’ outdoorsy type who would rather shun a Michelin-starred meal date in favour of some fresh air and outdoor adventure, go explore our pick of wild date ideas…
One of the largest primary forests left in Singapore, Bukit Timah is home to over 500 animals species and 840 flowering plants (renowned conservationist David Bellamy once estimated that it was home to more plant species than the whole of North America). As well as Singapore’s highest peak, there are several winding forest trails, that make the ideal date hikes. Alongside the four coloured trails, head to the Durian Loop for a quieter jungle-exploring experience. Some of the steep paths can make for quite sweaty work, so come armed with plenty of water, good trainers and your best exercise smile!
Enjoy a breakfast – and date – with a difference with this fab regular event at Singapore Zoo. Starting with a tram ride through the zoo (with an expert guide pointing out the 3,600 animals residing there), you will then be free to tuck into the international buffet in the company of the orangutans – the only place in the world where you can do this! In the northern part of the island the zoo boasts a new concept in animal-keeping, where animals roam freely in naturalistic habitats.
Overlooking the Strait of Johor over to Johot Bahru in Malaysia, this nature reserve in the far north is Singapore’s first ASEAN Heritage Park. Stroll along the mangrove forest boardwalks, while watching the incredible birdlife and if you are lucky you might spot some otters or saltwater crocodiles. If you and your date want to learn more about the species that live here, there are free guided walks by knowledgeable tour guides. Or if you are a creative type, you can bring along some art materials and enjoy honing your art techniques together.
Take a break from the city and challenge your partner to this kayak adventure on the beautiful island of Pulau Ubin. Here you can paddle through the mangrove areas and sea and spot some incredible wildlife – if you’re lucky a pink dolphin might even make an appearance! You will be guided and your experienced guide will be able to tell you about the ecological significance of the sights along the route and also help you hone your kayaking technique.
Saddle up with your date at Singapore’s biggest riding school, where there are over 150 horses in situ! Book a trail ride, where you can enjoy the natural sights and sounds of Bukit Timah along the luscious Fairways Green Track or Fairways Sand Ring. You will be assessed by an instructor first but if you are an experienced rider, you can even lease a horse each for the day! Pack some snacks and head off into the sunset together!
Enjoy being outdoors but don’t want to put in too much effort? Then hop on a Segway and head around Sentosa for a morning, afternoon or evening tour of the area. Head lone several beaches, including Siloso, Palawan and Tanjong and head to the Dolphin Lagoon, where you can view some beautiful pink dolphins playing and Singapore’s legendary icon – the Merlion – just make sure you have your phone ready for that selfie!
Comprising of 10km of green, open spaces that connect Mount Faber Park, Telok Blangah Hill Park, Kent Ridge Park, Fort Park and Labrador Nature Reserve, the Southern Ridges is ideal for a date away from it all. Best of all, there will be some seriously romantic moments with spectacular views over the city, harbour and the Southern Islands.
