In any loving relationship it’s vital that each party trust the other. When your partner has an affair, it may not be the actual sexual liaison itself that causes the most damage but the loss of trust, which like glue holds a relationship together.
Painful betrayals (be it a one night fling or a longer affair) often prove too much for some couples to overcome, while others manage to work through their problems and come out the other side even stronger than before.
Take That star Mark Owen has spoken about the relief he feels that his wife Emma Ferguson forgave him for his infidelity. He said he was ‘massively grateful’ to his other half, with whom he has three children, for forgiving him after he admitted to having ten affairs between 2004 and 2009 before they got married. They managed to patch things up after the singer had treatment for alcohol addiction in 2010.
He told Notebook magazine: ‘I feel relieved every day. To be around my family and around Emma, I’m really massively grateful. She’s been very patient and I can never thank her enough. I love my family with all my heart.’
At the time Mark, who also revealed he had a long-term affair with Neva Hanley, declared: ‘I have been an idiot. It’s all about me, my mistakes. Nobody else to blame. I have been living with the guilt. Maybe the drink was my way of dealing with the guilt, I don’t know… it hasn’t helped but I’m not blaming everything on it.’
Emma clearly decided that the life she had with Mark was worth saving but in each case the pros and cons of taking someone who has admitted to having their head turned takes time, commitment and work.
