World book day: 5 modern love stories

It is World Book Day tomorrow so we’re ready to fire up the Kindle or head to the local bookshops to seek out some inspirational love and romance reads. We’re guessing that you’ve probably already devoured the Austen and Brontë classics, so we thought we’d look at a variety of modern-day tomes, all published in the past couple of years:

Come closer. Are you ready? Good, then let us tell you a story…

FaultThe Fault In Our Stars by John Green – heart-warming love

Recently adapted for the big screen, John Green’s young adult novel tells the story of two teenagers, Hazel and Augustus, who meet at a cancer support group. Ambitious and heart breaking, we defy anyone who reads this to not have to go through at least five boxes of Kleenex in the process. The book is a multi-million, No 1 bestseller and has been dubbed “funny, clever, irreverent and life-affirming” by the critics.

RosieProjectThe Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion – funny love.

This sweet and funny rom-com centres on Don Tillman, a genetics professor in Melbourne, where his life is dominated by routines and schedules. Approaching his 40th birthday, he decides that he wanted to get married because married men live longer and are happier. He embarks on the wife project and creates a questionnaire in order to find the perfect partner but when he meets Rosie, all logic seems to disappear. Clever, original and genuinely funny, you’ll laugh out loud.

OnePlusOneThe One Plus One by JoJo Moyes – captivating love.

Jess Thomas has two children and two jobs and is struggling to make ends meet and life seems to be getting the better of her and her gifted daughter, Tanzie and teenage stepson Nicky. When Ed Nicholls enters their life, a captivating and unconventional romance follows. Emotional, funny and captivating – a great read!

BridgetBridget Jones: Mad about The Boy by Helen Fielding – light-hearted love.

Not strictly about love but no list would be complete without Helen Fielding’s follow-up about the world’s most famous singleton. Sharp, funny and entertaining, of course it also contains a hilarious relationship or two along the way. If you haven’t read it, we don’t want to ruin the plot but safe to say if you’re in need of some uplifting reading, this is a brilliant choice and Bridget is back to her witty best.

One&OnlyThe One and Only by Emily Giffin – unconventional love.

This New York bestselling author’s seventh book is about unconventional love. Known for her ability to look at all types of relationships, her latest tome follows the story of Shea, who goes outside her comfort zone of small town life in Texas. Talking about her inspiration for the book, she said: “I feel so often we have this feeling that our life and our relationships should look and be a certain way. But what if we want something that isn’t perfect on paper? What if we fell in love with the one person we shouldn’t?”
