Bluffer’s date idea: BFI London film festival

Marlon

Nothing says romance like a movie date — it’s the classic. And it’s not just a good night out. Choosing a film lets you make a subtle “this is me” gesture. Whether it’s an engrossing spy movie, a romantic weep-a-thon or an action knockabout, the film you choose says “this is where my passion lies, this is what makes me tick… and maybe I’m a bit different than you thought.”

When the lights go down and the small talk finishes, the thrill of the big screen gives a tingle that only cinema can. Films take you into a fantasy world where you feel brave enough to take your date’s hand, or ask if they’d like to go out again. So if you fancy a movie date, we think the best place this October is the BFI Film Festival.

When, where, what?
The BFI Film Festival runs from October 8th to 19th, and promises 248 films in 17 venues for 12 days. It’s a binge for film fanatics but there’s also rich pickings for the general audience — and daters.

Choose your film
Picking from over 200 films isn’t easy. But remember, this is your chance to show what really makes you tick. There’s no cheesy rom-coms here. If you’re taking an intellectual out, then try the intense Russian movie ‘Another Year’, which is billed as a “wounding two-hander [as] a young married couple in Moscow grapple with doubts about the future and divergent career paths.” Or the “tender, beautifully-observed” Spanish romance ‘10,000km’, another thought-provoking look at love and what technology can do to it.

But I don’t want a film about romance
That’s fine. With themes such as ‘thrill’, ‘debate’, ‘laugh’ and ‘dare’, you can truly take your pick. Travel lovers will be excited to delve into the international film offerings; there are films set everywhere from Egypt to Iceland. There is laugh out loud comedy, too. What we can guarantee, whether you’re laughing or crying, is that you’ll have enough fuel for conversation for many a future dinner date with your companion.

So are you in?
We’d say there’s plenty for the absolute film buff. You’ll be spoiled by special events and screenings. It’s not for the rom-com loving multiplexers among you that’s for sure. ‘Let your date choose the film’ say Lovestruck, ‘And you’re not only saying you want to know about his or her taste, but that you trust them to take you to entertainment heaven.’
