Still in bed with Scotland!

Keep the heid! (that’s stay calm, don’t get upset)

Yes, we know relations have been a bit strained over the past few weeks, but now with the referendum over and the decision that Scotland will stay part of the UK, it’s time to move forwards. If you’re dating a  ‘yes’ voting Scot and are keen to cheer them up, here are our pick of the best places to take them (kilts are optional):

BoisdaleBoisdale
This Scottish-themed bar and restaurant in Canary Wharf boasts a whisky bar, cigar terrace (and a cigar library, naturally), caviar and oyster bar and live music. It runs a series of events including whisky and cigar tasting and gamer dinners. The menu includes dishes like mini roast haggis with mashed potatoes and bashed neeps and wild venison, Claret and black walnut pie with braised red cabbage, pickled wild damsons and cinnamon, and Bloody Mary ketchup on the side.

CeildhlCeilidh Club
Holding regular Ceilidhs over London, you can expect Gay Gordons, Eight’ Reel and Dashing Whiter Sergeants. There’s is band and a caller so you know what the steps are and the events are perfect for beginners to the most advanced. Apparently it’s “like going to a Scottish wedding except you don’t have to buy a present”… Sounds good to us!

WhiskyBar10.15.40The Whisky Bar, The Athenaem Hotel
With 300 whiskies and counting at this bar based on Trafalgar Square, you might the list here isn’t just restricted to Scotch varieties. You can work your way through the menu from the Scottish Highlands to Japan. Surprisingly discreet, there are lots of corners to tuck yourselves away, so perfect for getting to know somebody that bit better.

DeeneysDeeney’s
If you’re looking to satisfy a homesick Scot, then choose a Macbeth haggis toastie, complete with haggis, melted cheese, mustard, caramelised onions and rocket, at Deeney’s (if they are veggie opt for the meat-free Lady Macbeth). Held at various venues and with regular pitches in Hackney and Greenwich, they serve classic toasties, with regional meats and cheeses. The founder, Carol, says: “Educating people in haggis is our main mission at Deeney’s, we want to promote the nutritious and tasty national dish to people everywhere, and grow the demand for the sustainable meat.”

And here are some handy Scottish sayings to really impress!

  • Whit’s fur ye’ll no go by ye! – What’s meant to happen will happen.
  • Keep the heid! – Stay calm, don’t get upset.
  • Dinnae marry fur money! – Don’t marry for money – you can borrow it cheaper.
  • Noo jist haud on! – Now just hold it, slow down, take your time
  • Ma heid’s mince – My head’s a bit mixed up
