How to survive your first holiday as a couple.

Summer holiday season is in full fling meaning lots of new couples will be jetting (or motoring) off to spend their very first holiday together. Let’s face it, the thought of being 24/7 with someone is scary enough when you’re married but that first holiday can feel both exciting and slightly nerve-wracking. Relax. Take comfort in the fact we all share the same concerns so follow the friendly and thoughtful advice from our Florida dating pals Dating Advice, and trust us on the sunscreen…

Thanks to the movies, when we think of holidays, images of loved up couples come to mind; the strolling hand in hand on the beach pose, the sipping and kissing over cocktails with a large sunset as a backdrop pose, the frolicking in the sea pose. You get our drift. But  ‘movie holiday garb’ aside, we get real here and consider a couple’s first holiday together…

Argue9That first holiday together is a big step of commitment to both people involved. It is more than just dating. It signifies a deeper relationship and creates new emotional bonds.
First on the agenda is to consider the strength of your relationship. Sad but true, holidays are often when break-ups occur due to the pressure of spending time together 24/7 and really getting to know your partner, nasty bathroom habits, little tantrums, warts, corns, bunions and all. You want to make sure that both of you are at a good enough level of commitment to enter into an intense holiday situation.

ClimbingAnother important task is to clarify what the holiday means to each of you individually. You want to be able to see eye-to-eye on what is going to happen for a week or two and trust us, women and men can have very different ideas of what makes a great holiday.  One of you may just wish to do nothing but sunbathe and read for the entire duration, whereas to the other,  a ‘holiday’ may mean hikes, climbing, surfing, sightseeing and generally not sitting down. Eliminate any misunderstanding or bad feeling by chatting about what you wish to do once you get there. Compromise and remember sometimes it’s fine not to be in each others pockets all of the time. Me time, even on a first couple holiday, is still ok!

Venice6Most importantly, you want to make your holiday memorable. Holidays are all about making good memories..or selfies. If you put in a little extra time beforehand to evaluate your relationship, expectations, and then do the necessary to make it memorable, your very first holiday together will be something to write home about…
