Should you kiss on the first date?

Are the days of playing hard to get and getting to know each other’s shoe size and favourite food long gone? It is the 21st century after all; so we think kissing at the end of a first date can’t be a deal-breaker. Can it?

Kissing on the first date, a good or bad idea?

Kissing on the first date, a good or bad idea?

There are plenty of things you definitely aren’t supposed to do, such as talking about your ex, sending text messages or diving into bed after an hour, but surely a goodnight smooch is not a bad thing?

Well, some of our friends don’t agree. Even Jennifer Lopez said: ‘If you kiss on the first date and it’s not right, then there will be no second date. Sometimes it’s better to hold out and not kiss for a long time. I am a strong believer in kissing being very intimate, and the minute you kiss, the floodgates open for everything else.’

We consulted the UK’s leading dating guru James Preece to get his thoughts on the right way to approach that all-important first date. He says: ‘A kiss on the cheek is the perfect way to start a first date. It sets the scene right from the start. After all, it’s a date, not just friends meeting up or a business meeting. A playful kiss at the end makes it clear that you are both interested in each other and keen to meet again.

‘Don’t just rush in – build up the tension and make sure they are comfortable. If you find they are leaning in to you and keep looking at your lips then there’s a good chance they want you to kiss them.

‘Finally, if you want this to be a long-term thing then resist the urge to sleep with them. A kiss is a test of chemistry and a promise of what it could lead to!’

We’ve been told!

Do you agree? Have you ever said no a kiss on date number one? Tell us your thoughts @lovestruck
