Top tips for office romance

WorkingGirl

Whilst we obviously hope you may find love just around the corner to where you work (er hum), many of us find love in the office. Whether it’s the guy in accounts, the girl from HR, or simply one of your fellow teammates, feelings often do develop beyond that of just friends. Balancing work and personal lives can be tricky at the best of times but balancing romance in the workplace is a whole other ball game! Etiquette can often be tricky and can often feel like you’re following office rules…so follow our top tips below for successful office love (and meet us by the photocopying machine in 5…)

Be clear

If someone at work has taken a shine to you but you are not interested, make sure you clearly communicate your feelings in order to avoid misunderstandings and drama. If you have feelings for someone and they are not reciprocated, remain professional and accept their wishes.

Consider the risk

It is very easy to get swept up in those heady feelings of an early relationship but before throwing yourself into a romance, consider the worst-case scenario, such as one of you dumping the other and the relationship ending badly and having to have daily contact. Would you feel you had to move on? Always take things very slowly. Get to know each other before committing.

Know company policy

It’s inevitable that relationships develop in the workplace but some company’s have policies regarding them and have rules against it. If you decide it’s worth it, you must be discreet.

9-5Keep it professional

Keep the nicknames and PDAs strictly outside of working hours. Never be tempted to talk about the relationship in detail with your colleagues.

Don’t email

Flirty emails can be fun but don’t send them via work addresses. One slip of the finger and everyone in the whole building could know what you are planning later…eek.

Don’t cut yourself off

Just because you are dating someone from work doesn’t mean you should socialise without other colleagues outside of working hours. It’s important to remain part of the team and be seen as independent from your partner.

Don’t get a reputation

Whatever you do don’t get a reputation for being a serial office dater. Try to avoid casual encounters and try to remain professional at office parties and functions.

ProposalBe honest

Once you know the relationship is serious, operate an honest and upfront approach with regards to telling your colleagues and your boss. It is better that they hear it from you than the office rumour mill.

Focus on work

As fun as a new relationship is, be sure you keep your eye on the ball and your career.
