10 ways to move on after a break-up

Have you ever split up with someone and feared you may never get over it? The end of a romance is never pretty, whoever ended it, and it is difficult for men and women alike.

Breaking up with a long term partner can be very hard. However there are proactive things you can do to make it easier.

Breaking up with a long term partner can be very hard. However there are proactive things you can do to make it easier.

Follow Lovestruck.com’s tips to help you move on after a big break-up and D-Day, aka ‘Dump Day’, will soon seem like a lifetime ago…

Cry
Have a good wail. Breaking up with someone who was as close as family is going to hurt, so crawl onto the sofa with a large box of tissues and cry like a baby. If you’re a guy, just make sure your flat mate is out.

Avoid Social Media
If you’ve been cheated on, you may want to tell the world what a two-timing rat your former lover was, but the likes of Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr should be avoided at all costs. If you must change your relationship status to single, do, but be prepared for the inevitable barrage of questions from ‘well-meaning’ types (who are basically just very nosy).

Seek out your friends
These are the best people to vent too, whether it’s over a beer – or five – for the men, or Ben & Jerry’s for the girls. Reconnect with old pals you have lost touch with and make time to see them.

Take care of yourself
Make sure you rest, eat some decent food and treat yourself well. Retail therapy is always the answer for the women as there is nothing a like a new pair of shoes (or handbag, or both, it’s a special occasion) to bring a smile to your face.

Clean the house
Get rid of all your former partner’s stuff. Clear the drawer of stuff, bin the toothbrush and ditch the music. Photos of the two of you together should also go in the bin. Be ruthless and you’ll feel like a new person afterwards.

Go on dates
We’re not suggesting jumping into bed with the next person who crosses your path but a bit of flirty fun is great for the ego and makes you realize that there are plenty more fish in the sea.

Exercise
Not only is hitting the gym a scientifically proven stress-buster but there are always attractive & interesting men – and women – to try and get your mind off your ex. The next time you see them you will look great.

Make a break-up playlist
Cheesy at it may seem, a sing-a-long in the car or in your bedroom can work wonders. My favourites include Kelly Clarkson’s ‘Since You’ve Been Gone’, Cee Lo Green ‘Forget You’ and Pink ‘So What’.

Stop Stalking Your Ex
If you are the ‘dumpee’ accept the relationship is over; constantly phoning and texting will not help. Checking their Facebook profile every ten minutes will stop you moving on. Unfriend, defollow and delete.

Do something new
Is there an activity that you have been promising yourself that you will try? Do it! Be it speed dating or snowboarding, learning something new will give you a new boost of confidence.
